Jacopo Bassano executed this richly colored Adoration scene showing the three Magi presenting gifts to the infant Christ. Known for his naturalistic approach to religious subjects, Bassano incorporated rustic details and ordinary people into sacred scenes.
The painting demonstrates the Venetian colorism Bassano learned from Titian, combined with his distinctive interest in peasant life and animals. Now at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh, the work shows how Bassano transformed traditional biblical narratives by setting them in recognizable contemporary Italian countryside.
