by Johannes Vermeer, 1655
In 1655, Johannes Vermeer painted this biblical scene early in his career, showing Christ visiting the sisters Martha and Mary. While Martha works, Mary listens to Christ, illustrating the contrast between active service and contemplation.
This is one of Vermeer's few religious paintings, created before he developed his famous domestic interiors. The work is at the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh.
