by Claude Monet
Claude Monet completed this atmospheric view of Westminster around 1903, capturing the Gothic spires dissolving into orange and violet sunset haze. The Thames reflects the fiery sky while the Parliament buildings become shadowy silhouettes. Monet worked from a terrace at St Thomas' Hospital across the river.
This canvas belongs to Monet's London series, painted during multiple visits between 1899-1904. He was fascinated by the city's famous fog and industrial atmosphere, which softened forms and created extraordinary color effects. Now at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
