by Correggio
Correggio rendered this tender scene of the Three Wise Men presenting gifts to the infant Christ. The composition shows the Madonna holding the Christ child as the Magi kneel in adoration, their richly dressed figures and exotic retinue contrasting with the humble stable setting. Correggio's characteristic soft modeling, warm palette, and gentle sfumato technique bring emotional intimacy and grace to this beloved biblical narrative.
Correggio worked primarily in Parma during the early 16th century, where he developed a graceful, sensuous style that anticipated the Baroque by several generations. His innovative treatment of light, tender religious imagery, and elegant figural compositions influenced later painters from the Carracci brothers to Parmigianino. This Adoration demonstrates his mastery at combining devotional feeling with artistic sophistication. The painting now hangs at the Pinacoteca di Brera in Milan, one of Italy's greatest picture galleries.
