Flemish artist David Teniers the Younger painted this version of Mad Meg, the folkloric figure who raids the mouth of Hell. The chaotic scene follows the tradition established by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. Teniers added his own interpretation to this popular subject.
Mad Meg symbolizes female aggression and chaos in Flemish folklore. Teniers was known for copying and reinterpreting earlier masters. This work remains in a private collection.
