by Edgar Degas
French artist Edgar Degas painted this pastoral landscape along the Orne River in Normandy. Rolling hills and verdant fields stretch beneath a soft sky, the view rendered with more freedom than his usual urban subjects. Degas rarely painted pure landscapes, making this work unusual in his oeuvre.
Though known for ballet and horses, Degas occasionally painted countryside scenes during visits to Normandy. This Impressionist landscape shows his ability to capture atmospheric effects in nature. Now at The Metropolitan Museum of Art.
