by Egon Schiele
Egon Schiele rendered this unusual interior view into the apartment of Leopold and Marie Czihaczek, showing a glimpse into private domestic space. The composition frames the room through a doorway or window, creating a voyeuristic perspective. Schiele's angular lines and muted palette give the ordinary scene an unsettling edge.
Though famous for his provocative figure work, Schiele also painted landscapes and interiors with the same nervous intensity. His Austrian Expressionist style influenced generations of artists. The painting belongs to the Belvedere in Vienna.
