Amedeo Modigliani painted the portrait of Maurice Drouard, a fellow artist in the Montparnasse circle. The composition displays Modigliani's signature style: an elongated face, almond-shaped eyes, and simplified features. Warm earth tones and fluid contours give the portrait an elegant, sculptural quality.
Modigliani's portraits combine influences from African sculpture, Byzantine art, and his training as a sculptor. His distinctive style was unappreciated during his lifetime but became highly valued after his early death. This painting remains in a private collection.
