Where to See Village with Mountains: Private Collection

Egon Schiele rendered this Village with Mountains, showing clustered buildings against a mountainous backdrop. The composition features Schiele's characteristic angular forms and muted earth tones. Rooftops and walls stack vertically, creating a compressed, almost claustrophobic arrangement.

Though best known for his provocative figure work, Schiele produced numerous landscapes and townscapes throughout his short career. His villages appear abandoned and melancholic, reflecting the psychological intensity he brought to all his subjects. This painting remains in a private collection.

Egon Schiele created this work. He was an Austrian Expressionist painter who died at 28 during the 1918 flu pandemic, leaving behind a highly distinctive body of work.

The painting reflects Schiele's Expressionist approach, with angular lines, compressed space, and a somber palette. Even his landscapes carry the psychological tension found in his more famous figure works.

Yes, Schiele produced numerous townscapes and landscapes alongside his figure paintings. His views of Bohemian and Austrian villages feature stacked buildings and empty streets that feel haunting and isolated.
