Amedeo Modigliani captures his subject Jean Alexandre in his signature elongated style. The sitter's stretched neck and almond-shaped eyes reflect Modigliani's unique synthesis of African sculpture, Byzantine icons, and Parisian modernism.
Modigliani lived a tragically short life, dying at thirty-five from tubercular meningitis. He worked primarily as a portrait painter and sculptor in Paris, where poverty and illness shadowed his years. Despite his struggles, he developed one of the most recognizable styles in modern art. His work influenced later Expressionist portraiture and remains highly sought by collectors.
