by El Greco
Ermoupoli, Greece
Permanently housed
El Greco completed this early depiction of the Virgin Mary's death, surrounded by the apostles. The Byzantine influence is evident in the composition and gold tones, reflecting El Greco's training in Crete before his move to Spain.
This work shows the artist before he developed his famous elongated figures and dramatic lighting. The traditional iconography follows Orthodox Christian conventions. It hangs at the Holy Cathedral of the Dormition in Ermoupoli, Greece.
