by Frans Hals
Frans Hals painted the portrait of Paulus van Beresteyn, a Dutch civic official. The subject appears in formal black attire with a white ruff collar, typical of prosperous Dutch burghers of the period. Hals' rapid, confident brushstrokes give the face a vivid, lifelike presence.
Hals excelled at capturing personality through fleeting expressions and loose paint handling. His portraits influenced later painters including Manet and the Impressionists. This work is held at the Louvre in Paris.
