Giovanni Battista Moroni painted A Soldier around 1555-1559, depicting a standing figure in full armor with a sword in his right hand. The painting measures 119 x 91 cm and uses a limited palette of browns and grays that creates a serious, dignified atmosphere.
Moroni was one of the great Renaissance portrait painters, known for his realistic depictions of the Bergamasque nobility and professional classes. Light falls from the left, casting shadows across the soldier's body and highlighting the metallic sheen of his armor. The identity of the sitter remains unknown, though the painting was once in the Spanish royal collection.
The work hangs at the Museo del Prado in Madrid, having been at the Royal Palace since at least 1814 during Ferdinand VII's reign.
