by Guido Reni
Guido Reni rendered this allegorical figure representing Charity, one of the theological virtues. The composition shows a woman with children, embodying selfless love and generosity in the idealized classical style Reni perfected.
Reni was one of the most celebrated painters in 17th-century Italy, known for graceful figures and luminous color. His allegorical works were widely copied and influenced religious art for generations. It hangs at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence.
