by Guido Reni
Guido Reni depicted St. Peter in remorseful prayer after denying Christ three times. The saint appears as an elderly man with upturned eyes seeking divine forgiveness, his hands clasped in devotion. Reni's silvery palette and idealized features create an image of spiritual anguish.
Reni specialized in devotional images of penitent saints, painted with elegant restraint. His idealized approach to religious emotion made such works enormously popular across Catholic Europe. Currently in a private collection.
