by Gustave Doré
Gustave Doré made this haunting image of Little Red Riding Hood meeting the wolf in the forest, one of the most memorable illustrations from Charles Perrault's fairy tales. The young girl stands innocent and vulnerable while the cunning wolf looms beside her, their encounter charged with danger. Dark trees frame the ominous meeting.
Doré was the nineteenth century's most influential book illustrator, creating over ten thousand engravings for works including Dante's Divine Comedy and the Bible. His fairy tale illustrations remain definitive. This painting hangs at the National Gallery of Victoria in Melbourne.
