French artist Gustave Moreau created this richly symbolic painting showing the ancient Greek poet Hesiod being crowned by the nine Muses. The figures gather in an otherworldly landscape, their elongated forms and jewel-like colors creating a dreamlike atmosphere. Moreau's characteristically dense, encrusted surfaces give the scene the quality of a Byzantine icon.
Moreau was the leading French Symbolist painter, creating mythological and biblical scenes charged with mystical meaning. He taught Matisse and Rouault at the École des Beaux-Arts, influencing the next generation of modern artists. Hesiod, author of Theogony, was said to have received his poetic gift from the Muses on Mount Helicon. This work now belongs to the Musée Gustave Moreau in Paris, the artist's former home and studio.
