Gustave Moreau produced this sheet of figure studies in 1858, working out poses and anatomical details that would inform his symbolic paintings. The sheet includes a male nude alongside studies of legs, arms, and other figures, all executed with the careful draftsmanship that underpinned his elaborate finished works.
Moreau's approach to the human figure combined academic rigor with mystical imagination. While his paintings often depicted gods, heroes, and mythological creatures, they were grounded in traditional life drawing. This preparatory work shows that foundation. He studied the body systematically before transforming it into the idealized forms that populated his symbolic compositions.
The Musée National Gustave Moreau in Paris holds this and thousands of other drawings by the artist. Moreau bequeathed his house and studio to the state before his death in 1898, including nearly 5,000 drawings. The museum opened in 1903 and remains the largest collection of his work anywhere. Visitors can see how his elaborate, jewel-toned paintings emerged from studies like this one.
