Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec completed this portrait of Dun, a Gordon Setter belonging to his father. The alert hunting dog is rendered with affection and skill. Before his Parisian career, Lautrec often painted subjects from his aristocratic family life.
This early work shows his developing observational skills and love of animals. The painting remains in a private collection.
