Hyacinthe Rigaud completed this portrait of Charles de Saint-Albin in his ecclesiastical robes. The composition displays the grandeur and authority expected of a high-ranking churchman, with sumptuous fabrics rendered in fine detail.
Rigaud was the leading French portrait painter of his era, famous for his state portrait of Louis XIV. His portraits of nobility and clergy combined dignity with psychological insight. This work is at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
