by Jan van Eyck
Jan van Eyck portrayed Isabella Borluut as part of the monumental Ghent Altarpiece, completed in 1432. She kneels in prayer alongside her husband Jodocus Vijd, the wealthy couple who commissioned this radical work.
The Ghent Altarpiece established van Eyck as the supreme master of Early Netherlandish painting. His oil technique achieved unprecedented detail and luminosity. Isabella's portrait demonstrates his ability to capture individual personality within religious devotion. The altarpiece remains at St. Bavo's Cathedral in Ghent.
