Jean-Léon Gérôme rendered this study of a Newfoundland (Terra Nuova) dog, demonstrating his skill at animal portraiture. The large, dark dog sits alertly, its patient expression suggesting the title "The Waiting." Gérôme's precise brushwork captures the texture of the thick fur and the animal's intelligent gaze.
Though famous for historical and Orientalist subjects, Gérôme produced accomplished animal studies throughout his career. This work shows his academic training and ability to render natural subjects with the same precision he brought to figure painting. Currently in a private collection.
