The wicked cities burn in the distance while Lot and his daughters flee in the foreground. Lot's wife, transformed into a pillar of salt, stands frozen between salvation and destruction.
Patinir's landscape dominates the composition, with fantastical rock formations and atmospheric blue distances typical of his style. The dramatic subject allowed him to paint both fire and serene natural beauty. Now at the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam.
