John William Godward completed this scene of a nude woman in a classical bath in 1890. The figure stands beneath flowing water in an elegant marble setting, posed with the grace that characterized Godward's idealized ancient world.
Godward was a leading Victorian Neoclassicist, sometimes called part of the "Marble School" for his detailed renderings of stone surfaces. His paintings depict beautiful women in Greco-Roman settings, combining sensuality with archaeological detail. The work is in a private collection.
