British artist John William Godward painted this idealized beauty in ancient Roman costume, reclining against a marble terrace. Her diaphanous drapery reveals classical forms while Mediterranean light warms the stone setting. Godward specialized in such visions of Greco-Roman womanhood, rendered with precise archaeological detail.
Godward belonged to the Academic Art tradition, maintaining classical ideals as modernism emerged. His detailed technique and sensuous classicism made him commercially successful though critically overlooked. Currently in a private collection.
