Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema completed this Venantius Fortunatus Reading His Poems to Radegonda VI in 1862, early in his career. The scene shows the 6th-century Italian poet sharing heartfelt verses with the Frankish queen and saint Radegund, creating an atmosphere of intimacy and literary devotion.
Alma-Tadema renders flowing garments and warm light with the fine detail that would become his trademark. Though he later became famous for classical antiquity scenes, this early work demonstrates his talent for historical painting. The work resides at the Dordrechts Museum in the Netherlands.
