by Mary Cassatt
Mary Cassatt executed this striking image of a Spanish dancer wearing a traditional lace mantilla. The work shows Cassatt's interest in women's lives and her Impressionist handling of light on fabric. The dancer's confident pose and the detailed lacework demonstrate Cassatt's skill at capturing both character and texture.
Cassatt was the only American artist invited to exhibit with the French Impressionists. She was particularly interested in depicting women in their daily activities with dignity and psychological depth. This work is currently in a private collection.
