German artist Matthias Grünewald painted this Calvary scene with his characteristic emotional intensity. The suffering Christ hangs on the cross while mourners grieve below. Grünewald's expressionistic approach to religious subjects influenced later artists.
The German Renaissance painter created some of the most visceral religious imagery of his era. This work is held at the Kunstmuseum Basel in Switzerland.
