Max Liebermann executed this garden scene at the Amsterdam Orphanage around 1885, part of his extended engagement with this subject. The work shows orphan girls in the courtyard garden, wearing their characteristic red-and-black uniforms. It hangs at the Kunsthalle Hamburg.
This version demonstrates Liebermann's evolution toward Impressionism. Compare it to his 1876 painting at the same location: the later work shows brighter colors, looser brushwork, and greater attention to how light filters through foliage. The complementary palette of spring green trees and red uniforms creates visual harmony.
Liebermann's orphanage paintings earned critical success across Europe. "Recreation Time in the Amsterdam Orphanage" won praise at the 1882 Paris Salon and established his reputation. He became a leading figure of German Impressionism and later served as president of the Berlin Secession.
