The Hamburger Kunsthalle opened in 1869 and grew into one of Germany's most important art museums under director Alfred Lichtwark, who from 1886 systematically built the collection of German Romantic painting. He rediscovered Caspar David Friedrich and Philipp Otto Runge decades before they gained wider recognition, securing key works that now form the core of the 19th-century galleries.
Friedrich's iconic Wanderer above the Sea of Fog arrived in 1970 and has become shorthand for Romantic art worldwide. The Sea of Ice, acquired in 1905, depicts a shipwreck crushed by Arctic ice. Beyond Romanticism, the collection spans medieval altarpieces to contemporary installations across three connected buildings. Works by Max Liebermann, Edvard Munch, and the Expressionists trace German art into the 20th century. A 2024 anniversary exhibition celebrated Friedrich's 250th birthday with 160 works.
