Peter Paul Rubens captured the Genoese noblewoman Maria Serra Pallavicino in this sumptuous portrait. She wears an elaborate gown with a massive lace ruff, her pose conveying aristocratic dignity. Rubens lavished attention on the luxurious fabrics, jewelry, and the sitter's composed expression.
During his years in Italy (1600-1608), Rubens painted numerous portraits for Genoese nobility, establishing conventions for aristocratic portraiture that influenced generations. The Baroque master combined Venetian color with his own dynamic energy. This portrait hangs at Kingston Lacy, a National Trust property in Dorset, England.
