Kingston Lacy in Dorset was the family home of the Bankes family from 1663 until the National Trust assumed ownership in 1982. The house was built by Sir Ralph Bankes after the family's original seat, Corfe Castle, was destroyed during the English Civil War.
William John Bankes (1786-1855), a friend of Byron, transformed the house into an Italianate palazzo and filled it with European art and antiquities. The collection includes Sebastiano del Piombo's Judgment of Solomon, an Egyptian obelisk in the grounds, and paintings by Rubens, Titian, and Van Dyck. The house retains its original furnishings and family pictures, giving it a lived-in atmosphere rare in grand English houses.
