Dutch artist Pieter de Hooch painted this soldiers gathered around a card game in this Dutch Golden Age scene. The men occupy a spare interior, concentrating on their game while light streams through a window. De Hooch was renowned for his mastery of light effects in domestic spaces.
While best known for tranquil courtyard scenes, de Hooch also painted guardroom interiors with soldiers at leisure. The carefully structured composition and natural lighting demonstrate his technical mastery. This work remains in a private collection.
