Rembrandt created A Village with a River in 1645, a small landscape measuring just 13 x 21 cm. Using varying densities of etching lines, he suggested the play of sunlight across a rural Dutch scene. Buildings cluster along a waterway in this intimate view of the countryside.
Though better known for portraits and biblical scenes, Rembrandt produced many landscape etchings and drawings during the 1640s. This small work demonstrates his ability to create atmospheric effects with minimal means.
