Thomas Gainsborough completed this double portrait of siblings Heneage and Lucy Lloyd in an outdoor setting. The young pair stand in a verdant landscape, their elegant clothing contrasting with the natural surroundings. Gainsborough excelled at combining portraiture with his love of landscape painting.
The relaxed poses and soft lighting create an atmosphere of aristocratic ease. Gainsborough's feathery brushwork gives the foliage a distinctive shimmer. This portrait hangs at the Fitzwilliam Museum at Cambridge University.
