Vincent van Gogh recorded a scene from the Borinage mining region of Belgium. He lived among coal miners there in 1878-1880, working as a lay preacher. This industrial landscape shows his concern for working people.
The experience deeply affected Van Gogh and shaped his artistic mission to depict humble subjects with dignity. This work is held at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
