Jules Dalou (1838-1902), fully Aimé-Jules Dalou, was a leading French sculptor of the late 19th century who brought social realist themes into monumental sculpture. After fleeing Paris following the Commune, he spent eight productive years in London before returning to France.
His terracotta figure studies of workers, bakers, and peasant women are among the most admired small-scale sculptures of the period, praised for their directness and humanity. His public monuments in Paris and his influence on younger sculptors helped shape French sculpture's turn toward modern subjects.
