Mark di Suvero
American
b. 1933
Mark di Suvero (born 1933) is an American sculptor known for monumental abstract steel constructions that combine industrial materials with dynamic, gestural energy. Born in Shanghai to Italian parents, he grew up in San Francisco and studied at the University of California, Berkeley.
Di Suvero's massive outdoor sculptures, assembled from I-beams, steel plates, and cables, are kinetic: elements swing, rotate, and shift in the wind. His work translates the gestural energy of Abstract Expressionist painting into three-dimensional form. Major installations are in public spaces across the United States and Europe.
