Roy Lichtenstein
American
1923–1997
Roy Lichtenstein (1923-1997) was an American Pop Art painter who turned comic book panels into monumental paintings. Born in New York, he studied at the Art Students League and Ohio State University before teaching and painting in a loosely Abstract Expressionist style through the 1950s.
Everything changed in 1961 when he painted Look Mickey, based on a Disney comic. His large-scale paintings mimicked commercial printing with Ben-Day dots, bold outlines, and primary colors. Works like Whaam! and Drowning Girl became Pop Art icons alongside Warhol's soup cans. Our collection includes 4 works by Lichtenstein at museums including MoMA and Tate Modern.
