Building Site with Willows

Adolph Menzel rendered this view of a construction site with willow trees. The unfinished structures and natural growth create an unusual subject for the German Realist. Menzel found interest in overlooked corners of modern life.

The artist was known for historical scenes but also painted contemporary subjects with sharp observation. This work hangs at the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
