Cathedral of Our Lady (Antwerp)

Construction on the Cathedral of Our Lady began in 1352 and stretched nearly 170 years, finishing in 1521 under architects Jan and Pieter Appelmans. Its tower rises 123 meters, making it the tallest church tower in the Low Countries and the largest Gothic church in Belgium.

Inside hangs Descent from the Cross, a triptych painted between 1612 and 1614 by Peter Paul Rubens for the cathedral's guild of arquebusiers. French occupiers removed the painting during the Napoleonic period, and it was not returned to Antwerp until the 19th century, after years on display in Paris.

Rubens painted three other major altarpieces for the cathedral across his career, and together they make the building one of the few places where a visitor can see the artist's religious commissions still hanging in the setting they were designed for.
