Construction on the current Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari began after 1338, replacing an earlier 13th-century church on land donated by Doge Jacopo Tiepolo in 1231. The Gothic building took more than a century to finish, with its bell tower complete by 1396 and the church formally consecrated in 1492.
Above the high altar hangs Assumption of the Virgin by Titian, a monumental altarpiece showing Mary's ascent toward heaven while the apostles gather below in astonishment. Titian is buried inside the Frari, so his most celebrated painting and his tomb share the same building, an arrangement few artists get to plan for themselves.
The basilica also holds work by Bellini and Donatello and serves as a burial site for several doges, making it one of Venice's richest repositories of Renaissance art outside the city's museums proper.
