The Querini Stampalia Foundation in Venice was established in 1869 through the bequest of Count Giovanni Querini Stampalia, who left his 16th-century palazzo, library, and art collection to the city. Carlo Scarpa's famous 1961-1963 renovation of the ground floor and garden is considered a masterwork of modern architecture.
The picture gallery on the upper floors preserves Venetian painting from the 14th through 18th centuries in period-furnished rooms. Giovanni Bellini's Presentation at the Temple and genre scenes by Pietro Longhi are highlights. The foundation also operates a library of 350,000 volumes and hosts contemporary art exhibitions.
