The Bilbao Fine Arts Museum (Museo de Bellas Artes de Bilbao), often overshadowed by the nearby Guggenheim, is one of northern Spain's most important art museums. Founded in 1908, the collection of over 10,000 works spans from the 12th century to the present.
Strengths include Spanish old masters (El Greco, Zurbarán, Goya, Ribera), Basque art, and a strong modern collection. The museum merged with a Museum of Modern Art in 1970, adding works by Gauguin, Francis Bacon, and Eduardo Chillida. A 2001 renovation by Luis María Uriarte modernized the galleries. Admission is free, and the museum sits in the Doña Casilda Park alongside the river.
