The Detroit Institute of Arts ranks among America's most significant art museums, founded in 1885 when Detroit's industrial wealth funded cultural ambitions. The current Beaux-Arts building on Woodward Avenue opened in 1927, funded by newspaper magnates and automotive titans. Edsel Ford personally commissioned Diego Rivera's monumental Detroit Industry murals in 1932-33, celebrating the city's manufacturing power. These frescoes, covering the museum's central court, remain among America's greatest public artworks.
The collection spans cultures and centuries, from ancient Egyptian artifacts to contemporary installations. The European galleries include works by Van Gogh, Matisse, and Rembrandt. The African and Indigenous American collections reflect Detroit's diverse population and long commitment to inclusive collecting. During the city's 2013 bankruptcy, officials proposed selling artworks to pay creditors, but public outcry and a coalition saved the collection. Entry to the permanent galleries is free for residents of three Michigan counties.
