The Kimbell Art Museum opened in 1972 in a building widely considered architect Louis Kahn's masterpiece. The cycloid vaults with their silvery natural light create an atmosphere of quiet contemplation rare among American museums. Industrialist Kay Kimbell and his wife Velma bequeathed their fortune to establish a museum for Fort Worth, and the foundation pursued quality over quantity, assembling a small but exceptional collection of paintings and sculptures.
European Old Masters form the core, including Caravaggio's The Cardsharps, one of his earliest genre scenes depicting a young man cheated at cards. Works by Michelangelo, El Greco, and Vigée Le Brun demonstrate the range of holdings. The museum added a Renzo Piano pavilion in 2013 for special exhibitions while preserving Kahn's serene original building. Asian antiquities and Pre-Columbian art extend the collection beyond Europe, and admission to the permanent galleries remains free.
