Claude Lorrain completed this mythological scene where Zeus, disguised as a white bull, carries off the princess Europa. The story comes from Greek mythology. Claude set the tale against one of his characteristic golden coastal landscapes.
Claude was famous for his idealized harbor scenes bathed in warm Mediterranean light. His influence on landscape painting lasted for centuries. This work is displayed at the Kimbell Art Museum in Fort Worth, Texas.
