Orvieto Cathedral (Duomo di Orvieto) in Umbria is one of Italy's finest Gothic churches, begun in 1290 and featuring a spectacular striped marble exterior. The facade, covered in mosaics and sculpture, took over 300 years to complete.
The chapel of San Brizio contains Luca Signorelli's fresco cycle of the Last Judgment (1499-1502), considered among the most dramatic treatments of the subject in Italian art. Fra Angelico had begun painting the vault in 1447 but left the project unfinished. Signorelli's powerful nudes influenced Michelangelo's treatment of the same subject in the Sistine Chapel a decade later.
