The Residenzgalerie occupies the third floor of the Salzburg Residenz, the former palace of the Prince-Archbishops. The gallery was established in 1923 using paintings from the Austrian state and private loans, though its core grew significantly in 1980 with the acquisition of the Czernin collection of Dutch and Flemish masters.
Holdings of around 200 paintings emphasize 16th- to 18th-century European art, with particular depth in Netherlandish genre painting and Italian Baroque. Works by Peter Paul Rubens, Adriaen Brouwer, and Carl Spitzweg feature in the collection. Since 2014, the gallery has been part of the DomQuartier Salzburg museum complex.
