The Skagens Museum in Skagen, Denmark, opened in 1928 to preserve the work of the Skagen Painters, a colony of Scandinavian artists who gathered at Denmark's northernmost tip from the 1870s through 1910s. P.S. Krøyer, Anna and Michael Ancher, and Marie Krøyer are the central figures.
The painters were drawn to Skagen's dramatic coastal light, which bathes the landscape where the North Sea meets the Baltic. The collection documents their community through paintings, letters, and personal objects. The museum expanded in 2017 with a new wing and operates as part of the Art Museums of Skagen. Krøyer's Summer Evening on the Beach is the most recognized work.
